When most people think about July, they think about fireworks, family barbecues, vacations, road trips, and celebrating our nation's independence.
For me, July has taken on a different meaning.
As a tow operator, wife, and small business owner, holidays often mean we are working while others are celebrating. Whether it is a family headed home from a weekend at the lake, a flat tire on the way to a barbecue, a breakdown in the Arizona heat, or an accident on a busy highway, emergencies do not stop because it is the Fourth of July.
And that is okay, because helping people is exactly why we do what we do.
But this year, independence means something even deeper to me.
It is not just about standing on your own. It is about building something people can depend on.
The reason I got behind the wheel of a tow truck in the first place was not because I was trying to prove a point.
It was because my husband, Shad, fell off a tow truck and broke his femur.
At the time, our family and our work had to keep moving. Like many women do, I stepped in where I was needed. What started as necessity became something that changed my life.
When I first climbed behind the wheel, I never imagined how much this industry would teach me.
Like many women entering a traditionally male profession, I was often underestimated. Some people assumed I was just helping my husband, doing paperwork, answering phones, or simply riding along for the day.
What they did not see were the early mornings, the late nights, the training, the recoveries, the problem-solving, and the determination it takes to learn every part of this business. What they did not expect is to see a Woman jump out from behind the driver's seat and get to work.
Over time, I realized independence is not something someone gives you.
It is something you earn.
· Every new skill learned.
· Every challenge overcome.
· Every difficult recovery completed safely.
· Every customer who places their trust in you.
· Every business that calls you back because they know you will do the job right.
Those moments build confidence. And confidence builds independence.
Freedom Looks Different Behind the Wheel
For many people, freedom means taking a road trip, exploring Arizona's incredible backroads, or enjoying time away with family and friends.
For me, freedom means knowing that when someone calls us on one of the worst days they have had in a long time, we have the equipment, the knowledge, and the experience to help.
Even better, I have a husband who has been around tow trucks since he could walk. Shad grew up behind the wheel with his grandfather, learning every aspect of this industry from the ground up. That kind of knowledge is not learned overnight, and I am grateful to have him there to guide me, teach me, and come out to help whenever I need an extra set of hands.
Sometimes freedom looks like towing a family vehicle safely to a repair shop.
Sometimes it looks like recovering a truck stuck deep in the desert.
Sometimes it looks like helping someone who simply needs a jump start so they can get back to work.
And sometimes, freedom looks like a customer being able to make one phone call and trust that the right people will work together to get them taken care of from start to finish and know that they are being treated with respect and kindness.
That is the service we believe in.
Building Something Together
One of the things I am most proud of is not just driving a tow truck. It is building this business alongside my husband, Shad.
When we officially started Shad Randall's Towing & Recovery in January, our fleet looked very different than it does today. In fact, our goal was to add a second truck in 2027. We had no idea we would have three trucks in our fleet, a storage yard, tow for the Town of Florence Police Department on their rotation list, have multiple Fleet Accounts, and gain the trust of our community and business partners... ALL before July 1st!
Through hard work, long days, and the incredible support of our customers, family, friends, fleet accounts, and community partners, we have continued to grow.
Today, we are proud to offer light-duty towing, medium-duty towing, roadside assistance, off-road recovery, accident recovery, vehicle transport, 5th wheel and motorhome towing / transport, equipment transport, and many more specialized recoveries throughout the Florence, Queen Valley, Superior, Globe, Apache Junction, Canyon Lake, and surrounding East Valley Arizona communities.
Every truck in our fleet represents another step forward. Not just for our business, but for the people who count on us when they need help most.
Becoming a Company Others Can Rely On
As we grow, one of the things that means the most to us is becoming a company our fleet accounts and local business partners can truly rely on, also.
Fleet work is about more than towing a vehicle from one place to another. It is about communication, timing, professionalism, and protecting the relationship that business has with its own customer.
When a fleet account calls us, they are trusting us with their vehicle, their customer, their schedule, and their reputation.
We take that seriously.
Whether we are helping a commercial customer, a repair shop, a local business, or a stranded driver on the side of the road, our goal is always the same: show up, communicate clearly, do the job safely, and treat people with respect and kindness.
That is how trust is built.
One call at a time.
Local Businesses Working Together
We also value the relationships we are forming with other businesses in our community, like Dad Bods Garage and other local repair shops, service providers, and professionals who share the same goal: helping people the right way.
A customer should not have to figure everything out alone when their vehicle breaks down.
They should be able to call for help and trust that the businesses involved will work together behind the scenes to get them taken care of from start to finish.
That may mean we tow the vehicle to a trusted repair shop. It may mean coordinating with a fleet manager. It may mean helping a customer understand the next step after an accident, breakdown, or recovery.
Whatever the situation is, we believe the customer deserves honesty, transparency, and follow-through.
That is the kind of network we want to help build in our community.
· Businesses working together.
· Customers being treated fairly.
· Clear communication.
· Ethical decisions.
· Reliable service from the first phone call to the final handoff.
To us, that is what community service really looks like.
Building a Better Standard
As a family-owned towing company, we know reputation matters.
We also know that every generation has the opportunity to build on what came before it and decide what kind of standard they want to carry forward.
For us, that standard is simple.
· Be honest.
· Be moral.
· Be ethical.
· Do what you say you are going to do.
· Treat people with respect and kindness.
· Take care of the customer.
· Build relationships the right way.
We are not focused on looking backward. We are focused on moving forward with integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
That is the kind of business we want Shad Randall's Towing & Recovery to be known for.
Not just a tow company. A trusted part of the community.
· A company fleet accounts can count on.
· A company repair shops can trust.
· A company families can call when they are stranded.
· A company other businesses are proud to work with.
That kind of independence is not about doing everything alone.
It is about building something strong enough that others can depend on it.
Serving Our Arizona Community
One of my favorite parts of this job is that no two days are ever the same.
One day we are helping a stranded family on Highway 79.
The next, we are recovering a Jeep from Box Canyon, transporting equipment for a local business, or delivering equipment or a fleet vehicle to a shop that is ready to get it back on the road.
We have met incredible people through this work. We have shared difficult moments with customers who have just been in an accident, and we have celebrated with people who were simply grateful someone answered the phone.
Being a local, family-owned business means we are not just working in this community.
We are part of it.
That is something we never take for granted.
What Independence Means to Me
This Independence Day, while many people are enjoying fireworks and celebrating with family and friends, we will likely be doing what we have always done: answering the phone when someone needs help.
Because independence is not just about standing on your own.
Sometimes it is about being the person someone else can depend on.
· The fleet manager who knows we will answer.
· The repair shop that trusts us to deliver safely.
· The customer who knows we will be honest.
· The stranded driver who just needs someone calm, capable, and professional to show up.
Whether you are traveling across Arizona this summer or simply driving across town, I hope you enjoy the holiday, stay safe, and make wonderful memories with the people you love.
And if your plans take an unexpected turn, know that we are just a phone call away.
Being a woman in towing has taught me many lessons, but perhaps the greatest is this:
Strength is not measured by how much you can lift.
Success is not measured by how many hours you work.
And independence is not measured by doing everything alone.
It is measured by showing up, doing the right thing, continuing to learn, and serving others with professionalism, compassion, and integrity.
As we celebrate Independence Day, I am grateful not only for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, but for the opportunity to serve this incredible community every single day.
I am grateful for the customers who trust us, the fleet accounts who rely on us, the businesses who partner with us, and the community that continues to support us as we grow.
From our family to yours, have a safe and happy Fourth of July.
